The Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Oladele Alake has expressed deep sadness in response to the news of the explosion that occurred last night in Ibadan, Oyo State. The minister personally signed a statement, extending his heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragic incident, which resulted in significant loss of lives and property.

“On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals, I offer my condolences to Governor Seyi Makinde and the good people of Oyo State. My sympathy goes out to the wounded and all victims who suffered losses, especially residents whose homes were destroyed. I pray that Almighty God comforts the families of the deceased and provides solace to those who lost valuables as they embark on the journey to rebuild.

“The Oyo State government and emergency response agencies, both at the state and federal levels, have pledged their support, and in the meantime, I have directed the ministry’s mine officers already on-site in Ibadan to actively participate in ongoing investigations to determine the immediate and remote causes of the explosion. We have initiated a comprehensive investigation, and our officers will collaborate closely with the state government to identify the actual cause.

“If the explosion was, indeed, caused by mining explosive devices, as earlier reported, the ministry will intensify efforts to crack down on those acquiring explosives and storing them illegally.

“I commend Governor Seyi Makinde for swiftly mobilising emergency response efforts, including deploying the fire service, police, and security agencies. I urge citizens to prioritise safety and report individuals or organisations that pose risks to public health and security,” he added.

The minister’s statement reflects both empathy for the victims and a commitment to thorough investigations to ascertain the root causes of the explosion. The tragedy in Ibadan has prompted swift action from the Ministry of Solid Minerals, demonstrating a dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens.

As investigations unfold, there is an assurance that the ministry will collaborate with relevant authorities to bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding the incident. The focus on addressing any illegal acquisition and storage of explosives underscores the commitment to public safety and security.

In acknowledging the prompt response of Makinde and the various emergency response teams, the minister recognises the importance of coordinated efforts in times of crises. This collaborative approach is essential for effective disaster management and emphasises the need for citizens to remain vigilant and report any potential risks to authorities.

While expressing condolences, Alake’s statement serves as a call to action, highlighting the importance of safety awareness and the collective responsibility to ensure a secure environment for all. The commitment to a detailed investigation reflects a proactive stance in preventing future incidents and holding accountable those responsible for any lapses in safety protocols.

As the community in Ibadan begins the process of recovery, the support from both the federal and state governments, alongside the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Solid Minerals, underscores the determination to address the aftermath of the explosion comprehensively. The minister’s words convey not only sympathy but also a commitment to preventive measures and a safer future for the residents of Ibadan and beyond.
