The Federal Government has announced the commencement of the distribution of 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains. Minister of Agriculture, Sen. Abubakar Kyari made this announcement during a press briefing in Abuja, accompanied by Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago.

Kyari outlined that the distribution, scheduled to commence this week, signifies the launch of the second phase of the dry season farming project. Niger State has been chosen as the pilot state for the distribution, with collaborative support from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Armed Forces, Police Force and other security agencies.

He stated, “Hopefully, by next weekend we should be able to roll off. We are starting with Niger State, then we will go to all the zones for distribution. It is 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains like maize, sorghum, millet and garri.”

The minister acknowledged the challenge of delivery and affirmed that the distribution process would begin promptly, following the template of NEMA, which would handle distribution through the office of the national security adviser.

Governor Bago, expressing readiness for the project, revealed that Niger State had already acquired 120 trucks of grains for distribution. He highlighted the state’s commitment to aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda on agriculture and food security.

“As a state, Niger has offered itself as a pilot state in terms of delivering the dividends of democracy in agriculture. Our sister states are coming on board, but we are leading,” Bago affirmed.

He emphasised the importance of education and sensitisation for farmers and rural dwellers, encouraging them to embrace agriculture as a solution to current challenges. Bago stated, “We will continue to cultivate. We will continue to farm. We are tired of collecting handouts from any other person. Agriculture is very vast.”

Acknowledging the diverse opportunities in agriculture, Bago pointed out specific areas like animal husbandry and aquaculture, given Niger State’s abundance of water bodies. He encouraged people to explore these avenues, stating, “We are encouraging our people to venture into.”

The initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting food security and stimulating agricultural activities, especially during the dry season. The distribution of grains aims to support farmers, enhance productivity, and contribute to the overall economic growth of the nation.
