The Federal Government has revealed that it is awaiting the results of a forensic investigation into the aftermath of the tragic explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State, to determine the actual cause of the incident.

The Ministry of Solid Minerals, headed by Dr. Dele Alake, is actively involved in coordinating efforts to uncover the facts surrounding the explosion.

In a phone call to Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, President Bola Tinubu expressed condolences and solidarity with the victims. Alake, who present during the call, joined in commiserating with the affected families and praised the swift relief response by the Oyo State government.

Following the incident, the Ministry of Solid Minerals deployed mine inspectorate officers to the explosion site to collaborate with other security agencies in the investigation. Alake, in a personal statement, conveyed his deepest sympathies to the people of Oyo State and reiterated the ministry’s commitment to unravelling the cause of the explosion.

During the Federal Executive Council meeting last week, Tinubu demonstrated a proactive approach to national security by establishing an inter-ministerial committee, led by Alake. The committee’s mandate is to develop a blueprint for securing Nigeria’s natural resources, including solid minerals, forests, and the marine economy.

The committee, which held its inaugural meeting, is working diligently to formulate strategies to achieve the presidential mandate. In the coming days, an expanded meeting with heads of security agencies will provide additional insights to guide the committee in presenting a comprehensive report to the President.

Alake emphasised the government’s commitment to addressing challenges at their roots, highlighting the need to await the results of the forensic investigation into the Ibadan explosion before making definitive statements. He stressed the importance of allowing security agencies to conduct their investigations without interference, ensuring that accurate information emerges, culprits are held accountable, and measures are implemented to prevent a recurrence. The minister’s stance reflects a dedication to transparent and informed decision-making in the face of sensitive situations.
