The Federal Government has unveiled plans to adopt digital public infrastructure (DPI) to revolutionise the livestock sector, focusing on enhancing efficiency, promoting transparency and improving traceability in livestock management across the country.

Speaking in Abuja, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha highlighted the initiative as part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to modernise agriculture and livestock production. The minister emphasised that adopting digital technology is critical to addressing challenges such as disease control, food safety and global market competitiveness.

“Adopting digital technology in the livestock sector is no longer an option; it is a necessity. Our goal is to ensure that the livestock value chain, from breeding to marketing, is efficient, sustainable, and profitable. With innovative solutions, we can reduce disease outbreaks, enhance productivity and improve the livelihood of pastoralists,” Maiha said.

He explained that the implementation of DPI will allow for streamlined livestock tracking, enabling stakeholders to monitor the movement and health status of animals in real time. The initiative is expected to build consumer confidence in locally produced livestock and position Nigeria as a major player in the global livestock trade.

The minister further noted that traceability would not only help in disease prevention but also improve food safety and boost Nigeria’s ability to meet international export standards.

At the event, co-founder of Livestock 247, Ibrahim Maigari provided insight into the company’s vision of integrating DPI to create seamless tracking and management of livestock across Nigeria.

“We are here to present the National Livestock Digital Public Infrastructure, and we believe it will be a revolution – a game-changer. Our goal is to create a robust system that tracks livestock and provides transparency at every level. By building a digital registry, we will improve market efficiency with easier access to verified information on prices, breeds and market conditions,” Maigari explained.

Maigari added that the system would enhance animal health services and make it easier to track and manage zoonotic diseases. He described the infrastructure as a “single source of truth” for livestock data, enabling individuals and investors to access verified market information at the touch of a button.

A statement by director of information and public relations at the Ministry of Livestock Development, Ben Bem Goong underscored Livestock 247’s mission to leverage technology to address key challenges in the sector. He noted that the company has been involved in significant projects, such as the Advanced Local Dairy Development Project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This project has delivered interventions to over 2,000 rural communities and provided animal health services to more than 200,000 cattle across Nigeria.

The proposed digital transformation will include:

  • The development of a national livestock database.
  • The introduction of digital tools for farmers to monitor and manage livestock.
  • The training of personnel to operate and maintain the digital infrastructure.

This initiative is expected to strengthen the sector, improve animal health, prevent zoonotic diseases, and create a more transparent and efficient livestock market for all stakeholders.
