The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has hailed the relentless contribution, leadership and support of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) towards the growth and progress of the organization and its activities both nationally and regionally.

The director, WMO Regional Office for Africa, Dr. Amos Makarau, in his letter of recommendation stated that WMO is impressed with the Federal Government and NiMet for the implementation of the Host Country Agreement signed between NiMet and WMO and further called on Nigeria to continually show its leadership on the African continent.

“May Nigeria continue to show true and unwavering contribution and leadership to the work of WMO in Africa. I know that NiMet has been rendering unsolicited capacity development-related support to several national meteorological and hydrological services (NMHSs) in Africa. You may think this a small step [by NiMet] but to us in the regional office, it is a giant leap. I am certain the Abuja office is now in the best shape and in very capable hands,” he added.

Recall that, on March 23, 2022, NiMet commemorated the World Meteorological Day with a presentation of a brand-new car by its director-general, Prof. Mansur Matazu to the WMO office in Abuja. This gesture was also acknowledged by Makarau. “On behalf of the Regional Office for Africa, which includes the representative office for north, west and central Africa and on my behalf, I wish to acknowledge, with extreme gratitude, receipt by the Abuja office of a utility vehicle to support the WMO Office.”

NiMet, in its reaction, said it remains committed to the integration and progress of meteorology in Nigeria and on the African continent, through the provision of technical support to other national meteorological organisations buoyed by the continuous assistance the agency receives from the WMO.
