Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum of Borno State has announced a policy to match the salaries of medical doctors in state hospitals with those in federal institutions.
The measure, effective from December 1,2024, aims to address the brain drain affecting the state’s healthcare sector.
Speaking at the 65th National Council on Health (NCH) in Maiduguri, themed “Accelerating Pathways to Universal Health Coverage: Strategies for 2030 Success,” Zulum emphasised the need to retain skilled healthcare professionals. The state has allocated N301 million to support 100 doctors in residency training and an additional N11 million for indigent medical professionals.
The governor reaffirmed Borno’s commitment to the Abuja Declaration, which advocates allocating 15 per cent of annual budgets to health. He highlighted ongoing investments in maternal and child healthcare, health infrastructure, and disease control programmes, but acknowledged challenges such as high maternal mortality rates.
Zulum also urged the Federal Government to establish a federal medical health centre in Borno to complement existing facilities. He reiterated the importance of a community-driven approach to healthcare, improved coordination of humanitarian aid and collaboration among federal, state, and local stakeholders.
Special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on health, Dr. Salma Anas lauded the governor’s salary reform initiative, describing it as a “critical step toward resolving human resource challenges” in Borno’s healthcare system.
The event brought together health leaders and stakeholders to discuss workforce development, community engagement, and digital health solutions, underscoring a collective commitment to equitable healthcare for all Nigerians.
