The Minister of State for Steel Development, Uba Ahmadu has underscored the indispensable role of the steel sector in advancing the oil and gas industry in Nigeria.

Ahmadu, who was speaking at the 8th Sub-Saharan Africa International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (SAIPEC) in Lagos State, highlighted the significance of steel in extracting valuable resources essential for the economy.

He emphasised the pivotal role steel plays in creating components vital for oil and gas exploration, production and transportation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to revitalising the steel sector, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda for sustainable development.

“The establishment of the Ministry of Steel Development is a strategic and visionary move to advance Nigeria’s industrialisation and economic diversification. This aligns with the overarching goals of the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda, including industrialisation, job creation, economic empowerment and sustainable development,” noted Maigari.

Addressing industry stakeholders, Maigari stressed the necessity of collaboration between the Ministry of Steel Development and the oil and gas sector. He emphasised that oil and gas exploration and production heavily depend on steel fabrication for creating robust structures that withstand the harsh conditions of the industry.

Encouraging partnership opportunities, Maigari stated, “We are open to collaboration, joint ventures and knowledge sharing, aiming to create a mutually beneficial ecosystem that drives growth and prosperity for both industries.” He urged stakeholders to explore the potential of the Nigerian steel sector, emphasising the benefits of local content development, job creation and sustainable economic growth.

Ahmadu acknowledged the vital role played by the National Metallurgical Training Institute (NMTI) in providing industry-specific training and equipping Nigerians with essential skills for the oil and gas sector. Commending the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN) for recognising the steel sector’s importance, he anticipated that SAIPEC 2024 would facilitate valuable connections, collaborative ventures and innovation in both industries.

In a separate event marking the 75th anniversary of Dorman Long Engineering, Ahmadu applauded the company’s success story, highlighting its transformative power through collaboration. Recognising Dorman Long’s commitment to excellence, he expressed confidence in the company’s leadership in shaping a new era for steel in Nigeria.

In conclusion, Ahmadu emphasised the indispensable nature of the steel sector, serving as the backbone for economic growth and infrastructure development. His speeches reflected the government’s dedication to fostering collaboration, innovation and sustainable development across key industries in Nigeria.
