The director-general of the Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHESTCO), Prof. Paul Onyenekwe has emphasised that the agency’s goals are rooted in national service delivery in innovative science, technology and engineering for national development.

Speaking during the 2024 Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science & Technology (FMIST) First Quarter Ministerial Servicom Committee (MSC) meeting at the complex headquarters in Kwali, Abuja, Onyenekwe outlined SHESTCO’s commitment to advancing technological capabilities for the benefit of the Nigerian economy.

Hosting the MSC meeting aligns with the need for collective re-engineering of service delivery, especially in the context of the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda of productivity, innovation, science and technology, according to Onyenekwe. He highlighted SHESTCO’s specific mandates, including the development of facilities for the effective practice of application-oriented science and technology in Nigeria. The agency conducts research and development activities involving cutting-edge technologies to strengthen the country’s technological base.

The SHESTCO boss noted that the complex operates through advanced research centres such as the nuclear technology centre, biotechnology and genetic engineering, advanced mathematics and simulations and physics and chemistry. These centres are fully equipped to conduct proactive research and development in their respective areas, contributing to Nigeria’s technological advancement.

Furthermore, Onyenekwe highlighted SHESTCO’s people-centered and national development-focused research activities, including environmental assessment for improved life expectancy, production of innovative products like recyclable and biodegradable polymers, lead-carbon batteries and refractory bricks for various applications.

During his keynote address, the director of reform coordination and service improvement at FMIST, A. B. Saadu stressed the quarterly stakeholder meeting’s major objective: peer review, sharing of best practices, and experiences to sustain the citizen-centered culture of providing services in the ministry and its parastatals. He emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve the desired objectives.

The focal officer for SERVICOM at SHESTCO, Isaac Aisagbonhi, expressed gratitude for hosting the event, underscoring Onyenekwe’s commitment to national service delivery. He noted that national service delivery has become the focal point of the director-general’s managerial and administrative style.

The meeting provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss and review service delivery initiatives, share best practices, and promote a citizen-centred approach in providing services. With SHESTCO at the forefront of technological innovation, the event underscored the agency’s vital role in advancing national development through science, technology and engineering.
