A panel of experts is scheduled to delve into the implications of digital culture for democracy during the public presentation of a book authored by Omoniyi Ibietan, the head of media relations at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The event is set to take place tomorrow, July 25, 2023, as announced by the book’s publishers.

The discussion will follow the review of Cyber Politics: Social Media, Social Demography, and Voting Behaviour in Nigeria, written by Azubuike Ishiekwene, the editor-in-chief of Abuja-based Leadership Newspapers.

The panel discussion, titled ‘The Cyber Context of Political Communication and its Implications for Democracy in Africa,’ will feature esteemed panellists, including Ibietan, public affairs analyst and CEO of Orascom Properties, Majeed Dahiru and deputy dean at Baze University, Abuja, Prof. Abiodun Adeniyi.

Chido Onumah, a social entrepreneur, journalist, writer, author and coordinator of the African Centre for Information and Media Literacy (AFRIMIL), will lead the discussion.

The panel’s focus will be on the role of cyber politics in shaping past general elections in Nigeria and its potential implications for future elections.

Published by Premium Times Books, the book spans 460 pages and comprises 12 chapters. It meticulously examines a crucial phase in Nigeria’s democracy through its elections.

Drawing insights from Nigeria’s 2015 presidential election, the book offers profound analyses of voting behavior and its implications for the nation’s future.

The book has received extensive acclaim for its skillful rendition and groundbreaking intellectual approach.

The formal unveiling of “Cyber Politics” will be conducted by the executive vice-chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta, who also wrote the foreword for the book.

Prominent figures, including Danbatta, have lauded the book and its author for its comprehensive exploration of the historical context of Nigerian politics, the interplay between social media and voting behavior, and the influence of the social media ecosystem on the electoral process.

In his foreword to the book, the NCC CEO hailed the book as a compelling narrative and a valuable guide for scholars exploring various political communication themes.

Premium Times Group confirmed that the book has been available in hardback and paperback versions in bookstores nationwide since June 12, 2023. Electronic copies are also accessible for purchase on online platforms, including Amazon.

The public presentation of the book is expected to draw prominent Nigerian personalities and stakeholders from the political and cyber/digital ecosystems.
