The Federal Government is on track to revolutionise Nigeria’s marine sector through the National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy (NPMBE), according to the minister, Adegboyega Oyetola.
Speaking at a two-day technical validation workshop in Lagos on the draft policy, Oyetola described the framework as comprehensive, tackling challenges while unlocking vast potential. “This nine-part document presents a detailed overview of Nigeria’s marine resources and outlines objectives, legal frameworks and actionable strategies,” he said.
The draft policy addresses critical areas, including maritime transport, fisheries, aquaculture and marine innovation, alongside stakeholder engagement strategies. It also highlights Nigeria’s progress in maritime governance, including ratifying key international protocols.
Oyetola noted partnerships with the African Union, Norway and WorldFish have enriched the policy development process. He emphasised that Nigeria is pursuing a position in the International Maritime Organisation to strengthen its global maritime influence.
Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oloruntola encouraged participants to ensure the policy reflects Nigeria’s aspirations and sustainable development principles.
The workshop signifies a major step in Nigeria’s efforts to position its marine and blue economy for global competitiveness.
