The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Chartered Risk Management Institute of Nigeria (CRMI) have announced that both organisations plan to collaborate to strengthen and promote best practices in risk management within the agency.

This decision was reached during the courtesy visit to the director-general of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike by the registrar/chief executive of CRMI, Mr. Victor Olannye and other members of the governing council of the institute on Thursday, June 27, 2024.

During the visit, Olannye briefed Anosike on the activities of CRMI, including membership details, upcoming seminars and conferences, certifications, and available risk management education.

Olannye emphasised the impressive developments at NiMet under the leadership of Anosike as DG, such as the provision of enhanced meteorological services, which help mitigate aviation and other sectorial risks through various early warnings, weather and climate information, and staff capacity development. Olannye also extended an invitation to Anosike, DG of NiMet, to join the CRMI council, along with approving him to be awarded a fellowship of the institute.

Anosike highlighted that climate change has changed the perception of risk management. He emphasised how NiMet’s weather and climate forecasts contribute towards climate risk management, and suggested including climate risk certification in CRMI’s curriculum. Anosike expressed NiMet’s willingness to partner with the institute, stating that he believes the relationship will be mutually beneficial, and that CRMI will also help NiMet strengthen its risk management processes. He also mentioned that NiMet will consider CRMI’s request to join the Council.
