Nigeria Health Watch has announced its plan to hold the second edition of the ‘Celebrating Womanhood Art Gala’ in Abuja on March 24, 2023. The gala, themed ‘Elevating Women’s Voices for Quality Maternal Healthcare,’ aims to advocate for maternal health programmes and services that prioritise women’s perspectives and experiences. This event is part of the activities to celebrate International Women’s Month.

According to the managing director of Nigeria Health Watch, Mrs. Vivianne Ihekweazu the gala aims to raise awareness and motivate stakeholders to take action on maternal health and other gender-related issues using creative art. The gala will feature artworks curated by the Female Artists Association of Nigeria and the National Gallery of Art. Participants can attend the event physically or virtually via Nigeria Health Watch’s website and social media platforms.

The event seeks to bring stakeholders from various sectors together to discuss maternal health in Nigeria, as maternal mortality remains a significant public health concern. According to the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, 512 women die per 100,000 live births in the country. To improve maternal healthcare service delivery, it is necessary to incorporate women’s voices and experiences into policy development.

“A woman’s perception of the care she receives,” she said, quoting MSD for Mothers, “is an integral part of her clinical experience and, therefore, an important consideration in improving the quality of maternity care.

“Maternity care that focuses on women’s needs and treats women respectfully is likely to lead to greater satisfaction as well as better and more equitable health outcomes.”

In conclusion, Nigeria Health Watch’s ‘Celebrating Womanhood Art Gala’ aims to use creative art to advocate for better maternal healthcare that centers on women’s perspectives and experiences. The event seeks to bring stakeholders together to raise awareness and promote discussion on maternal health in Nigeria, highlighting the need for all stakeholders to collaborate and take action.
