NGO Provides Vital Breast Cancer Screenings For 207 Women

A non-governmental organisation, MamaJazzYard Charity Foundation recently organised a free breast cancer screening event, benefiting 207 women from underserved communities across the Federal Capital Territory. 

Held at APIN Medical Laboratory and Diagnostics in Abuja, the event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and prevention of breast cancer, coinciding with the celebration of International Women’s Day.

The initiative, spearheaded by the convener of MamaJazzYard Charity Foundation, Mrs. Folashade Samuel reflected the organisation’s commitment to promoting women’s health and wellness. Through mammogrammes, clinical breast exams and consultations, the event aimed to equip women with knowledge about breast health and encourage proactive healthcare practices.

Samuel emphasised the significance of community-driven efforts in combating breast cancer, a disease that poses a significant threat to women’s health globally. She stressed the foundation’s dedication to providing accessible screening services, particularly to women facing financial constraints or limited healthcare access, underscoring the belief that every woman deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of her socioeconomic status.

According to the head of radiology at APIN Medical Laboratory and Diagnostics, Mrs. Bibian Yager breast cancer remains a leading cause of mortality among women worldwide. Initiatives like those undertaken by MamaJazzYard Charity Foundation play a vital role in raising awareness, promoting early detection, and ultimately saving lives. Yager emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts and community outreach in addressing healthcare disparities and improving outcomes for women affected by breast cancer.

The breast screening event comprised two components: ultrasound for women under 35 years and mammogrammes for older women. Mrs. Yager highlighted the foundation’s holistic approach to women’s health, which includes not only screening but also awareness campaigns conducted through various platforms such as social media, live videos, online sessions and group discussions. These efforts aim to educate women on improving their overall well-being and breast health.

The senior radiographer at APIN Medical Laboratory, Ms. Nkem Akpamgbo emphasised the positive impact of MamaJazzYard Charity Foundation’s supportive environment and emphasis on early detection. By providing free screenings and valuable medical advice, the foundation continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of women in the community.

Participants in the screening event expressed gratitude for the opportunity to receive free screenings and access essential medical advice. The event, which commenced at 8:20 am, received positive feedback from attendees, highlighting the importance of initiatives like these in promoting women’s health and well-being.
