The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a public alert regarding a fraudulent LinkedIn account impersonating the executive vice chairman (EVC), Prof. Umar Danbatta.
According to the commission’s director of public affairs, Reuben Muoka, the fake account was created by unscrupulous individuals with the intention of defrauding unsuspecting members of the public and social media users who might mistake it for the genuine account of the NCC’s EVC.
“For clarity, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the EVC of NCC, does not have a LinkedIn account. Any LinkedIn account claiming to be that of the EVC of NCC is undoubtedly fake.
“We are collaborating with the appropriate security agencies to investigate the origin of this fraudulent act and put a stop to it.
“We urge the public and our esteemed stakeholders to exercise caution and vigilance while on social media platforms or in cyberspace, as there are many fraudulent individuals and groups seeking to defraud unsuspecting users.
“The commission maintains an official presence on the Internet through its website (www.ncc.gov.ng) and verified social media platforms. All information about our activities, programs, and reports can be verified on these platforms.
“We also encourage everyone to follow our official social media accounts for credible updates and announcements.
“Members of the public are advised to exercise caution when accessing or using information from social media,” the statement concluded.
