In commemoration of the World Meteorological Day 2024, the director-general of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike has reiterated the agency’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives, property and livelihoods nationwide.

Anosike made this assertion at NiMet’s headquarters in Abuja during the commemoration of the 2024 World Meteorological Day in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

Anosike emphasised the significance of commemorating the day ahead of its usual date of March 23rd to facilitate the active involvement of young people and other stakeholders. He stated, “We recognise the indispensable role of meteorology in building a sustainable developed society. From providing accurate weather forecasts to mitigating the impacts of natural disasters, as well as building climate-resilient societies, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding lives, property and livelihoods across the country.”

Furthermore, Anosike highlighted the pressing issue of climate change, labeling it as an existential threat to the planet. He stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to construct a weather and climate-resilient society. Anosike asserted, “We must not relent at encouraging our young minds to build their capacity for meaningful contributions to effective climate actions that are impactful and measurable.”

In his concluding remarks, Anosike cited the words of the secretary-general of WMO, Prof. Celeste Saulo who emphasised the responsibility to ensure a safer and healthier world for future generations. Anosike echoed Saulo’s sentiment, affirming the critical role of current actions in shaping the future for generations to come.

During the event, the permanent representative of WMO for North, Central and West Africa, Mr. Bernard Gomez drew attention to the recent weather fluctuations experienced in Nigeria. He underscored the importance of NiMet’s vigilance in response to these changing weather patterns, urging communities to heed weather forecasts and alerts. Gomez emphasised the necessity for collaborative efforts among governments, scientists, communities and individuals to harness weather and climate information for a sustainable future.

Expressing gratitude for Nigeria’s partnership with WMO, Gomez commended the Federal Government, particularly Anosike, for their strong collaboration. He anticipated Anosike’s forthcoming role in the WMO Executive Council and expressed confidence in his continued support for less endowed nations within the region.

In a goodwill message, the director-general of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Engr. Clement Nze lauded NiMet as a valuable partner in providing essential data for NIHSA’s operations. Nze acknowledged NiMet’s contributions to the country’s socio-economic development and highlighted the agency’s significant role in detailing the impacts of climate and weather changes through its annual Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) programme.

The commemoration event featured poetry and drama performances by students from various schools, including Anglican Girls Grammar School Gudu, Holy Family College Kuje, Government Secondary School Gwagwalada and Government Science and Technical College Abaji, showcasing the importance of meteorology and climate action in their lives and communities.

NiMet’s reaffirmed commitment on World Meteorological Day reflects the agency’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerians amidst the challenges posed by climate change and extreme weather events. Through collaboration, education and proactive measures, NiMet strives to build a resilient society capable of weathering the storms of tomorrow.
