In a groundbreaking announcement at the Technology Innovation Expo 2024, Chief Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, revealed the Federal Government’s resolute commitment to dedicating 0.5 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to fuel Research and Innovation. Nnaji declared this significant move during the event themed “STI: Solution to National Economic Challenges”.
The minister highlighted the proactive approach by the government, asserting that allocating a specific percentage of the nation’s income to research and development (R&D) constitutes a strategic investment in sustainable economic growth and the development of Nigeria. President Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to promoting the National Policy on Welding and Welding Related Fields, approved in 2022, was also underscored, emphasising its role in fortifying the economy, especially within the oil and gas sector.
Nnaji reiterated the dedication to advancing the manufacturing sector and elevating the GDP by establishing the National Centre for Training in Welding and Welding Related Fields across the six geopolitical zones. These centres are pivotal for training, re-training, evaluation and certification in the welding sector, contributing to human resource development and industrial growth.
The minister elucidated that the Expo’s theme, “STI Solution to National Economic Challenges,” encapsulates the belief that integrating science, technology and innovation (STI) into economic policy will foster sustainable development, resilience and prosperity for the nation. He stressed the key role of STI in unlocking sustainable potentials and propelling the nation and businesses towards economic prosperity through industrial development and growth.
Imo State governor, Sen Hope Uzodinma endorsed the transformative power of science, technology and innovation in reshaping economies globally. He urged the country to deploy technology in the agricultural sector to enhance food security and alleviate poverty. Commending the ministry for its commitment to the STI sector, Uzodinma advocated for the extension of STEM education to nursery schools to “catch them young”.
The permanent secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Esuabana Nko-Asanye outlined the objective of the techno expo, emphasising its role in bringing together innovators, inventors and investors to drive rapid technological advancement in Nigeria. She highlighted the crucial role of STI in addressing the nation’s security challenges.
The ambitious investment plans and the strategic focus on STI underscore the Federal Government’s vision for a technologically advanced and economically resilient Nigeria. The expo serves as a platform to unite stakeholders and foster collaboration towards achieving these transformative goals.
