The Federal Government has officially inaugurated the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development Project Ecosystem Steering Committee, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s journey towards digital transformation and inclusive development.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the conference room of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) Abuja, was presided over by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
Akume highlighted the importance of the Nigeria Digital ID4D Project in revolutionising identification and access to services, emphasising its potential to enhance service delivery, governance and opportunities for growth in the digital economy. “The Nigeria Digital ID4D project holds immense promise in revolutionising identification and access to services,” he remarked.
Director-general of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote underscored the critical role of digital identity in driving socio-economic development and empowering citizens. She expressed confidence in the project’s transformative impact and emphasised the Commission’s commitment to its success. “The Nigeria Digital Identification for Development Programme represents a bold and ambitious initiative aimed at leveraging digital technologies to enhance service delivery, improve governance and unlock opportunities for our citizens,” she stated.
The steering committee, comprising key stakeholders from various ministries and agencies, is tasked with guiding the strategic direction of the Nigeria Digital ID4D Project. Their mandate includes ensuring alignment with international best practices, respecting the privacy and rights of all Nigerians and overseeing the project’s implementation.
Coker-Odusote expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their support and commitment to the national endeavour. She reiterated the commission’s readiness to collaborate closely with the Steering Committee and partners to realise the vision of a digitally empowered Nigeria.
Members of the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development Project Steering Committee include representatives from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (chairman), the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Budget and National Planning, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, the National Identity Management Commission (Secretary), among others.
The inauguration of the committee marks a significant step forward in Nigeria’s efforts to harness digital technology for national development and underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring inclusive growth and prosperity for all citizens.
