FG Awards PRODA For Excellence In STI, Celebrates Innovative Tech

The Federal Government has lauded the Project Development Institute (PRODA) Enugu for its groundbreaking innovations aimed at addressing societal challenges in Nigeria.

During the closing ceremony of the Science, Technology and Innovation Expo themed “STI: Solution to National Economic Challenges,” organised by the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST) in Abuja, FMIST Minister, Chief Uche Nnaji commended PRODA for clinching the third position in the research institutes category at the expo.

Represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Mrs. Esuabana Nko-Asanye, the minister urged PRODA to continue innovating technologies that provide practical solutions to real-life challenges, emphasising that innovations must be impactful and benefit society.

Speaking to reporters, PRODA director-general, Dr. Peter Ogbobe highlighted the significance of their award-winning innovation, the indigenous water filter made from clay, which not only provides clean water but also contributes to preserving lives and improving public health.

Ogbobe emphasised PRODA’s dedication to research excellence, attributing its success to the hard work of researchers and their innovative approach to utilising local resources effectively.

PRODA is exploring potential collaborations with various firms, including Momas Electricity Manufacturing Company Ltd, Coscharis Farm Igbariam, Harbin Institute of Technology, China, to commercialise and collaborate on various products and services.

The institute’s director-general emphasised PRODA’s commitment to leveraging science, technology and innovation (STI) tools to develop sustainable solutions that foster economic growth and resilience. PRODA has developed high-productivity machines and equipment to address challenges in agro-processing, reducing post-harvest losses significantly.

PRODA has also mechanised palm fruit processing and cassava to starch processing, among other initiatives, to enhance efficiency and quality in agricultural production.

During PRODA Day, the institute’s director-general was honoured with an award of excellence in technology and innovation development by MIDASS Touch, further recognising PRODA’s significant contributions to technological advancement and innovation in Nigeria.

The recognition of PRODA’s innovative efforts underscores the importance of investing in research and development to drive economic growth, address societal challenges, and improve the quality of life for Nigerians. As PRODA continues to pioneer solutions through innovation, it sets a commendable example for other institutions and reinforces the government’s commitment to promoting science, technology and innovation for national development.
