The African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) has urged journalists to grasp the diverse beliefs and motivations shaping people’s decisions on immunisation, in a bid to address the prevailing issue of vaccine hesitancy.
The regional technical coordinator at AFENET, Dr. Patrick Nguku delivered this message during the “Social and Behaviour Change (SBC), Risk Communication module” of the Media-EIS Fellowship Programme in Abuja.
Recognising the pivotal role of journalists in shaping public opinion, Nguku emphasised the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle vaccine hesitancy. He stressed the importance of understanding individuals’ concerns about perceived benefits, adverse effects and the impact of social norms and community dynamics.
“Before engaging in discussions about vaccines, it is crucial to understand the thoughts and feelings of individuals regarding perceived benefits and adverse effects,” Nguku stated, reflecting the sentiments echoed by many individuals grappling with vaccine hesitancy.
He highlighted that addressing these concerns through targeted messaging and communication strategies is essential to reach and engage those who may be sceptical or undecided about vaccination.
Nguku underlined the critical role of community influencers and trusted sources in shaping attitudes and behaviours towards immunisation. He emphasized the need for segmented audiences and tailored messages that address specific concerns and motivations across the country.
“As discussions around vaccine hesitancy continue, segmenting audiences and tailoring messages to address specific concerns and motivations across the country is vital,” Nguku added.
Promoting health, addressing practical considerations and engaging with key influencers were identified as key strategies to combat vaccine hesitancy in the country. Nguku concluded that understanding the dynamics of influence and interaction within communities is crucial for designing effective strategies to disseminate information, foster engagement and drive positive change.
