The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani has initiated the formation of a five-man ministerial committee tasked with reviewing operational conditions and proposing fiscal measures to alleviate macroeconomic pressures affecting telecommunications operators in Nigeria.

The committee, equipped with a six-point terms of reference, aims to tackle issues encountered by telecommunications companies in delivering high-quality services to end-users nationwide.

In his statement, Tijani emphasised the critical role of the telecommunications industry in Nigeria’s GDP contribution and national development. He highlighted its significance in fostering innovation, promoting digital inclusion and driving holistic growth across the country.

Outlined by the ministry’s head of press and public relations unit, Kania Andeyaba the terms of reference for the ministerial committee are as follows:

I. Review the operational conditions of the telecommunications industry in Nigeria and propose strategic initiatives to mitigate the impact of macroeconomic challenges on telecom operations.

II. Examine fiscal measures affecting the telecoms industry and propose initiatives to alleviate the burden on telecom operators.

III. Explore incentives to enhance backward integration in the telecoms sector, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign exchange for service provision.

IV. Evaluate shared services and infrastructure arrangements within the industry, proposing incentives and policy directions to enhance the competitiveness of the Nigerian telecommunications sector.

V. Review existing local content strategies for the telecoms sector, aligning them with the current administration’s policies and programmes.

VI. Co-opt or invite competent individuals, firms, or organisations to provide insights or suggestions in line with the committee’s terms of reference.

Tijani emphasised the committee’s mandate to deliver its report within one month, focusing on identifying critical industry challenges and offering viable solutions in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s programmes and policies.

The establishment of this committee underscores the government’s commitment to addressing key challenges facing the telecommunications sector, facilitating its growth and ensuring its alignment with national development objectives. Through collaborative efforts and strategic initiatives, the committee aims to promote a conducive environment for telecom operators, foster innovation and enhance digital connectivity for all Nigerians.
