Agric Ministry Fetes Umakhihe, As He Bows Out Of Civil Service

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) bid a fond farewell to its immediate past permanent secretary, Dr. Ernest Umakhihe as he officially retired from The Federal Civil Service.

The ministry organised a heartfelt farewell dinner in recognition of Umakhihe’s outstanding contributions to the civil service and the agriculture sector, marking the conclusion of his commendable 35-year career in active service on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

During the farewell dinner, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari spoke eloquently about Umakhihe’s exceptional services and unwavering dedication throughout his career. He emphasised Umakhihe’s relentless pursuit of excellence, selfless service and astute leadership, leaving an indelible mark on both the ministry and the nation.

Kyari commended the outgone permanent secretary for leading his subordinates with courage, wisdom and determination, significantly contributing to the advancement of the agricultural sector. He highlighted Umakhihe’s experiences, skills, integrity, discipline, dedication, loyalty and respect for diversity, noting that these qualities would undoubtedly guide him in his future endeavours.

In her welcome address, the chairman of the organising committee and director of human resources management in the ministry, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Alade thanked the outgoing permanent secretary for his invaluable services to the nation. She acknowledged his rise to the pinnacle of his career through hard work, tenacity and focus and wished him a rewarding retirement life.

Director of planning and policy coordination, Mr. Ibrahim Tanimu praised Umakhihe’s result-driven approach and his humility, noting his willingness to apologise if wrong. Responding to the warm sentiments, Umakhihe expressed gratitude to God and attributed his success to the cooperation of his subordinates and the goodwill he enjoyed throughout his career.

He further revealed his intention to delve into partisan politics in his home state of Edo.

The event, attended by the federal and state ministers for agriculture and food security, chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, permanent secretaries, directors general, directors in the ministry, among others, served as a fitting tribute to a remarkable career that saw Umakhihe serve in various ministries and departments, culminating in his elevation to the esteemed position of permanent secretary.
