The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has decided to take advantage of the Federal Government’s intervention funds for methanol fuel in order to drive national development.

This decision was made during a workshop organised by the department of environmental sciences and technology of the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (FMSTI).

The workshop aimed to engage the business community in conducting feasibility studies for the nationwide adoption of methanol fuel technology and diffusion. With the theme “Enhancing Business Opportunity for Methanol Driven Economy,” the workshop provided a platform for discussions on the potential of methanol as a source of energy and its contribution to economic growth.

In his opening remarks, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Sen. Adeleke Mamora announced the Federal Government’s commitment to providing intervention funds to support the development of methanol fuel technology. He emphasised that this initiative aligns with President Muhammadu Buhari’s agenda and his recent order to create 100 million jobs within a decade. The utilisation of methanol’s value chain for industrialisation is seen as a crucial element in achieving this ambitious goal.

The president of ACCI, Dr. Al-Mujtaba Abubakar expressed his appreciation to the minister for bringing this initiative to the attention of the chamber. He also commended the Nigerian government’s efforts in promoting methanol as an alternative source of energy in the country. Abubakar highlighted the numerous benefits of methanol, including job creation, technology development, domestication, electricity generation, clean household energy services, chemical industry value chain, reduction in pulmonary diseases, efficient transportation services and the cessation of gas flaring.

It is worth noting that the policy advocacy centre of ACCI had previously expressed interest in collaborating with the ministry for the implementation of the methanol project. The ACCI sought the ministry’s presentation of the project to potential investors and users within the chamber. Now, this request has become a reality and a recent development.

During the workshop, resolutions, appeals and interventions were made to address any potential challenges that may arise in the future and hinder the success of the project. The ACCI remains committed to supporting the development of methanol fuel technology and harnessing its potential for the nation’s progress.

By leveraging the Federal Government’s intervention funds, the ACCI aims to play a significant role in the advancement of the methanol industry, contributing to job creation, technological advancements, and the overall growth of the Nigerian economy. The collaboration between the chamber and the government signifies a crucial step towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient future for the country.
