10 Northern States To Experience Dust Haze, NiMeT Warns

Low-Visibility-Dust-Haze

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMeT) has alerted the public on the possibility of a dust haze prevailing over some cities in the northern region of the country and leading to the deterioration of horizontal visibility.

A statement issued over the weekend by the agency’s general manager public relations unit, Muntari Ibrahim, revealed that the forecast by NiMeT’s Central Forecast Office (CFO) predicted that the situation could gradually begin this evening.

“Fresh dust plume has been raised at its source region (Faya Largeau, Chad Republic). This is expected to advect into the country and reduce horizontal visibility.

“The dust haze is expected to intensify before the end of the day over most parts of the north, horizontal visibility which began deteriorating from the evening of Saturday, February 19, could continue over the region, keeping visibilities to 1000m and below over places like Maiduguri, Yobe Nguru, Potiskum, Dutse, Gombe, Yola, Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, and Kaduna,” it said.

The statement advised road users and people with respiratory problems to exert caution.

“Flight operations may be disrupted and airline operators are advised to pick up their flight folders and adhere to regulations, especially at aerodromes in the northern parts of the country,” it added.
