On March 24, Nigeria joined the global community in observing World TB Day, an annual event aimed at raising awareness about TB and mobilising efforts to eliminate it. This year’s theme, “Yes, we can end TB,” resonated with Nigeria’s slogan, “No gree for TB, check am o,” highlighting the nation’s determination to confront TB head-on.
The event also featured the executive director of KNCV TB Foundation Nigeria, Dr. Bethrand Odume who underscored the urgency of accelerating efforts to achieve the 2030 goal of TB eradication. Odume emphasised the need for sustained commitment and innovation to overcome TB-related challenges.
Acting board chair of Stop TB Partnership Nigeria, Dr. Queen Ogbuji-Ladipo highlighted the role of World TB Day in raising awareness and mobilising public support for TB control efforts. She announced the launch of various activities and the 2024 National TB Conference to galvanise action against TB.
Coordinator of the International Research Centre of Excellence (IRCE) at the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN), Dr. Evaezi Okpokoro shared insights into recent advancements in TB diagnostics and treatment. Dr. Okpokoro highlighted ongoing research initiatives, including clinical trials for new diagnostic tools and vaccines.
Head of the treatment component at the National AIDS and STIs Control Programme (NASCP), Dr. Clement Adesigbin emphasised the importance of adherence to TB treatment regimens. He urged affected individuals to follow their prescribed medications diligently to ensure successful treatment outcomes.
The World TB Day 2024 event served as a platform for stakeholders to reflect on progress made and chart a course for future TB control efforts in Nigeria. It showcased the nation’s commitment to ending TB through innovation, collaboration, and community engagement.
Despite the challenges posed by TB, Nigeria remains steadfast in its resolve to eradicate this disease and improve the health and well-being of its citizens. With concerted efforts and continued support from partners, Nigeria aims to achieve a TB-free future for all.
