The Lagos State Government has refuted circulating social media claims that it has reintroduced the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab clarified that the state has not reinstated the monthly environmental sanitation and will not be imposing movement restrictions at the end of July.
Wahab denounced the viral news as misinformation spread by troublemakers aiming to confuse the public. He urged residents to disregard the fake news and continue their daily activities without concern for any movement restrictions on the last Saturday of July.
Clarifying the governor’s actual announcement, Wahab explained that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during a sanitation sensitisation exercise at Campos playground on Lagos Island, announced a new initiative which involves weekly community-based sensitisation and awareness exercises, encouraging all residents to participate.
Wahab stated, “The governor also mentioned that state government officials will lead by example each week, joining residents in voluntarily cleaning their environments and spreading the sanitation message.” He emphasised that “at no point did Governor Sanwo-Olu announce the commencement of a monthly exercise or movement restrictions starting in July or any other month.”
The commissioner encouraged all residents to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings consistently, rather than waiting for government-declared sanitation days or movement restrictions. This ongoing commitment to environmental cleanliness is vital for the well-being and hygiene of the community.
He reiterated the state government’s focus on promoting regular community involvement in maintaining a clean environment without enforcing monthly sanitation exercises or movement restrictions at this time. Residents are urged to continue their daily routines and contribute to the overall cleanliness of their neighbourhoods.
