In a significant move towards improving healthcare services across Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has announced the immediate upgrade of critical health infrastructure and equipment in all six geopolitical zones. This initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to revitalising the health sector and ensuring better service delivery for all Nigerians.

In a statement released on Monday in Abuja, Chief Ajuri Ngelale highlighted the Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative led by Tinubu. Under this initiative, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), will undertake a comprehensive overhaul of cancer treatment infrastructure and other vital developments in six tertiary hospitals across the country.

Ngelale outlined the establishment of oncology and nuclear medicine centers in selected teaching hospitals as a pivotal step in Tinubu’s efforts to make world-class cancer diagnosis and care accessible nationwide. The designated facilities include the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, University of Nigeria (Nsukka) Teaching Hospital, Federal Teaching Hospital Katsina, University of Jos Teaching Hospital and Lagos University Teaching Hospital.

Additionally, ten critical healthcare service expansion projects will be implemented across various fields, including radiology, clinical pathology, medical and radiation oncology and cardiac catheterisation. These projects, to be carried out in designated hospitals across all geopolitical zones, aim to provide equitable access to advanced healthcare services.

The initiatives, slated for completion within 12-18 months, are designed to enhance disease screening and diagnostics, reduce mortality rates, and create employment opportunities across clinical, administrative, and managerial sectors. They also prioritise capacity building for clinical personnel in advanced procedures and treatment modalities, aligning with Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda. Tinubu’s nationwide health infrastructure upgrade initiative signals a significant commitment to improving healthcare access and quality across Nigeria. Through strategic investments and targeted projects, the administration aims to address healthcare disparities, enhance disease management and promote socio-economic development in the country.
