The director-general of NESREA, Dr. Innocent Barikor has emphasised that the environment must be a priority in the deployment of telecommunications infrastructure in Nigeria.
He stated that all such installations must comply with existing environmental regulations.
Barikor made this commitment during a meeting with representatives from two European companies, Consulting & Management and Europe Ltd., who were in his office to update him on the European Union-funded project titled “EU Support to the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy for Studies Supporting a 90,000 km fibre optic network and Improved Digital Literacy in Nigeria.”
In a statement released by the agency’s assistant director of press, Nwamaka Ejiofor, Barikor mentioned that the environmental implications of this deployment would be carefully considered. He assured that due diligence would be conducted before the project begins and he highlighted the importance of educating the public about these developments.
Professor M.T. Ladan, who led the delegation, assured the director-general that the team is already taking the necessary steps to ensure compliance, particularly with regard to the environmental impact assessment for the project. He added that their visit to NESREA is part of a broader effort to engage stakeholders and consult on the project.
