The Africa Health Budget Network (AHBN) has called upon the Nigerian government to actively support the local manufacturing of orthodox medicine as a strategic measure to address health emergencies in the country. In a recent interview with Science Nigeria, the coordinator of the network, Dr. Aminu Magashi stressed the significance of establishing local manufacturing companies for orthodox medicine within Nigeria, citing it as a crucial step in enhancing the nation’s preparedness for health crises. He identified the need for the government to allocate substantial capital resources to ensure the growth and development of these local manufacturing entities.Expressing his concerns about the feasibility of such a financial commitment, Magashi underscored the government’s pivotal role in proactively supporting the growth of healthcare-related industries. He emphasised that robust local manufacturing companies are essential for addressing healthcare emergencies effectively and improving the overall health system in the country.Amidst these challenges and opportunities, Magashi advocated for a more assertive approach, citing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government’s initiative, “Unlocking the Value Chain.” This initiative aims to streamline processes, enhance coordination among stakeholders and improve the healthcare sector’s efficiency, particularly in responding to emergencies. Magashi explained, “By prioritising the development of local manufacturing companies for orthodox medicine and providing the necessary capital resources, the government can make significant strides in strengthening the healthcare system and ensuring access to quality healthcare for all Nigerians”.Highlighting the initiative’s importance, Science Nigeria reported President Tinubu’s recent launch of “Unlocking the Value Chain” to address health emergencies in the state. The initiative targets improved efficiency and effectiveness in the health sector through process streamlining and enhanced coordination among stakeholders.Recognising the urgency imposed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the government acknowledges the need for a more coordinated and efficient response to health emergencies. The initiative focuses on enhancing access to healthcare services, fortifying the healthcare system, and building the capacity of healthcare workers. With the aim of identifying and addressing bottlenecks in the value chain, the government’s initiative aligns with the broader goal of improving the overall quality of healthcare in the state. It seeks to ensure that residents receive timely and effective care, especially during periods of heightened health risks.
