The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Education and Core International, has unveiled the Nigerian Capital Market – Secondary Schools Quiz Competition, a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting financial literacy among young Nigerians.
The competition, which kicks off in September 2025, will run for six months and involve 370 secondary schools – 10 from each of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It will adopt a three-stage tournament structure, beginning with state-level preliminaries, followed by zonal semi-finals and culminating in a national grand finale.
Participating students will access a Virtual Trading Platform that simulates real-time stock trading using data from the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX). The experience is expected to provide students with hands-on exposure to capital market operations and financial decision-making.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, director of Core International and Financial Markets Indaba, Patrick Muzundo — an affiliated organisation providing support for the event — said the initiative is designed to equip students with vital financial knowledge and encourage a culture of academic excellence, teamwork and inclusivity.
“Teachers will also participate in a dedicated training workshop to help guide students and facilitate the long-term integration of financial literacy into school curricula,” he said.
Muzundo emphasised that the quiz, themed Empowering Future Investors through Knowledge, is aligned with the SEC’s mandate to protect investors and develop Nigeria’s capital market.
By nurturing a financially literate generation, he added, the initiative hopes to empower young Nigerians with the skills to navigate the capital market and make sound financial decisions.
The competition will be hosted on the Financial Markets Indaba platform, which brings a track record of successful national financial education campaigns.
