The director-general of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Umar Mohammed has urged Nigerians to continue adhering to flood preparedness protocols, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to effective flood management in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Monday, October 7, 2024, Umar revealed that the water level in the River Niger Basin has gradually receded since the start of October.

He also noted that Jebba Dam is currently spilling excess water, regulated by the Kainji Dam operators, who had maintained a 53 cm buffer to accommodate any changes in inflow.

“NIHSA, through the director of operational hydrology, Pastor Femi Bejide is working closely with the operators of Kainji and Jebba dams to manage the reservoirs,” he stated.

He added that although the rain is gradually shifting southward, there is still some inflow into Nigeria, monitored from stations at Jidere Bode and Kende.

Highlighting the agency’s collaboration with dam authorities both nationally and internationally, Umar reiterated that NIHSA is committed to effectively managing river flooding incidents to support Nigeria’s socio-economic growth.
