In a significant move to address the alarming rise in image-based sexual abuse (IBSA), commonly known as ‘revenge porn,’ the UK government has joined forces with TechSocietal to unveil an innovative web tool named “Lawbrella”.
The British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Mr. Jonny Baxter highlighted the pivotal role of awareness in combatting online gender-based violence, sexual abuse and exploitation during the launch event in Lagos State on Tuesday.
Lawbrella, a multifaceted web tool, transcends traditional legal assistance, aiming to combat injustice and inequity, enhance the online environment and uphold privacy rights in Nigeria.
Baxter stated, “Violence against women and children serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive effects of gender inequality worldwide, and Lawbrella is committed to empowering Nigerian women and girls by providing essential resources and support in combating sexual exploitation and online abuse”.
He underscored the Digital Access Programme’s leading role in driving positive change in the digital sphere, emphasizing innovation in partnership with entities like TechSocietal to address pressing societal issues.
“Lawbrella exemplifies our dedication to safeguarding the rights and well-being of vulnerable individuals, particularly women and children who have suffered from image-based sexual abuse,” he remarked.
The founder and executive director of TechSocietal, Ms. Tope Ogundipe emphasised the organisation’s commitment to enhancing online protection for women and children, stating that Lawbrella goes beyond legal support to instigate change.
“We are delighted to have the UK Government’s support through the Digital Access Programme in developing Lawbrella. This collaboration demonstrates the power of global partnerships in addressing digital inclusion and rights issues, particularly affecting vulnerable segments of society, and creating meaningful solutions,” she expressed.
Ogundipe highlighted that Lawbrella seeks to connect IBSA victims with specialised technology lawyers dedicated to safeguarding the digital rights of women and children.
She underscored the Digital Access Programme’s initiative in tackling the distressing issue of revenge porn in the digital age and stressed that Lawbrella provides tailored legal support to address the complexities surrounding image-based sexual abuse.
“Lawbrella’s primary goal is to offer a secure environment for victims to seek legal assistance and guidance. The platform facilitates connections with experienced technology lawyers who possess extensive knowledge in handling IBSA cases, ensuring victims’ digital rights and privacy are protected,” she explained.
Furthermore, she emphasised that the partnership between the UK government and TechSocietal marks a significant advancement in combating revenge porn.
“By harnessing technology and legal expertise, Lawbrella aims to empower victims and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. The web tool not only provides legal aid but also raises awareness about the legal ramifications of image-based sexual abuse, serving as a deterrent for potential offenders,” she said.
