The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the water levels of the nation’s major rivers and tributaries, underscoring its role in flood management across Nigeria.

In a statement released over the weekend, NIHSA’s director-general, Umar Mohammed, highlighted that water levels in River Benue have been receding slightly over the past few days. He noted that the likelihood of devastating flooding along River Benue is gradually diminishing.

However, Mohammed urged citizens to remain vigilant, emphasising the unpredictability of climate patterns. He advised Nigerians to continue following flood preparedness protocols, even as the immediate risk appears to lessen.

“Due to the variability of climate, it is essential for citizens to stay safe and keep adhering to flood preparedness measures,” he said.

Mohammed also stated that NIHSA is working closely with the authorities managing Lagdo Dam, ensuring proper communication and monitoring of water releases from the dam, which impacts the downstream river flow. “NIHSA remains committed to monitoring water levels at critical stations and collaborating with relevant authorities to ensure effective flood management,” he added.
