The Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has taken a significant step toward improving safety on Nigeria’s inland and coastal waterways with the inauguration of a Special Committee on the Prevention of Boat Mishaps.
The formal inauguration, performed by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, underscores the government’s commitment to protecting lives and fostering a sustainable marine transport system.
Addressing committee members and stakeholders, Oyetola emphasised the critical role Nigeria’s waterways play in commerce, transportation and community connectivity. He acknowledged that while these waterways are vital to economic growth, the frequent tragic boat mishaps have resulted in significant loss of lives and property, necessitating urgent intervention.
The minister explained that the committee was established in response to the recent increase in boat accidents across the country. Its primary mandate is to conduct a comprehensive review of commercial boat operations, identify the root causes of mishaps, and propose sustainable solutions. He stressed that the committee members were carefully selected based on their expertise, experience and dedication to maritime safety, urging them to approach their task with the highest sense of responsibility.
The committee is chaired by the managing director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Bola Oyebamiji and comprises representatives from four selected states, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, marine engineering specialists, health and safety experts and various stakeholders in the maritime sector. Deputy director of the inland waterways division at the ministry, Adams Offie will serve as secretary.
Speaking on the significance of the committee’s establishment, Oyetola noted that it aligns with the 2024 International World Maritime Day theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First.” He reaffirmed the government’s determination to prioritise safety in all aspects of maritime operations, ensuring that regulations and enforcement mechanisms are strengthened to prevent avoidable tragedies.
Responding to the minister’s address, committee chairman and managing director of the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority, Bola Oyebamiji, expressed appreciation for Oyetola’s proactive leadership in the maritime sector. He commended the minister’s unwavering commitment to improving safety, efficiency and regulatory compliance in the industry.
Oyebamiji assured that the committee would work diligently to justify the confidence reposed in them. He emphasised that their recommendations would be data-driven, practical, and aligned with global best practices in maritime safety.
The Special Committee on the Prevention of Boat Mishaps represents a critical step toward enhancing safety measures, protecting lives, and ensuring that Nigeria’s waterways remain a reliable and secure mode of transportation.
