Oil Spill

An oil spill has been reported at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) loading terminal, SMI, in Bonny, Rivers State.

The spill, which occurred over the weekend due to a ruptured pipeline, prompted SPDC to take immediate action by shutting down the affected pipeline and deploying containment booms to safeguard nearby communities.

Despite these measures, the spill has reached the shoreline, raising concerns about potential environmental and community impacts.

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has established an emergency operations center to monitor the situation closely. The agency is collaborating with SPDC and other stakeholders to evaluate the spill’s extent and determine appropriate remediation steps.

NIMASA has assured the public that efforts are underway to minimize the spill’s impact and restore affected areas. The agency urged residents to remain calm as it works to address the incident effectively.
