NSIB To Release Preliminary Report On United Nigeria Airlines Accident

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has announced its intention to soon release the preliminary report on the recent incident involving a United Nigeria Airlines Embraer ERJ145 aircraft with the nationality and registration marks 5N-BWY.

The incident occurred at approximately 06:33 pm local time on September 7, 2023, while the aircraft was flying from Abuja to Lagos.

The aircraft, carrying 51 passengers and 4 crew members, experienced the incident upon landing on Runway 18R of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, during which it skidded off the runway. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

In a statement issued over the weekend, NSIB requested the assistance of the general public in the form of pictures, videos, or recording evidence that may aid in conducting a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Additionally, an emergency hotline has been provided at +234-807-709-0909 for immediate communication.

The NSIB emphasised the importance of respecting the privacy of all individuals involved in the incident and cautioned against making assumptions about its cause until the formal report is released.

As a multimodal investigation agency, the NSIB is tasked with investigating transportation accidents and serious incidents in Nigeria. Its primary objective is to identify the probable causes of such incidents and provide safety recommendations to prevent their recurrence.
