The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and the Nigerian Navy have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to improve collaboration in accident prevention, investigation and mitigation within Nigeria’s maritime environment.

This strategic partnership, formalised at the Naval headquarters in Abuja, had key officials in attendance, including NSIB director-general, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr. and Chief of Naval Safety and Standards, Rear Admiral Ibrahim Dewu.

The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation between the two institutions in crucial areas such as accident prevention, research, capacity building, and search and rescue operations. A significant component of this agreement is the Nigerian Navy’s provision of operational expertise in diving, search and rescue, and site security during investigations. In exchange, the NSIB will offer specialised training for Navy personnel on accident investigation and prevention and grant access to its advanced laboratory facilities for data analysis and research.

Badeh expressed optimism that this collaboration would enhance efforts to prevent accidents and protect lives within Nigeria’s maritime sector. “This MoU is a critical step in boosting our ability to effectively investigate and mitigate maritime accidents in Nigeria. The Nigerian Navy’s expertise in search and rescue operations, diving, and maritime security will complement the bureau’s investigative capacity. Together, we are committed to preventing future accidents, improving safety, and safeguarding lives in Nigeria’s waters,” Captain Badeh emphasised.

Dewu reaffirmed the Navy’s readiness to provide operational support, ensuring timely and thorough investigations of maritime incidents. “Our role is essential in responding quickly to maritime accidents, and this collaboration will allow us to further improve the safety of Nigeria’s waterways. We are fully committed to supporting the NSIB in achieving its safety objectives,” he stated.

Beyond addressing immediate maritime safety concerns, the agreement aligns with Nigeria’s broader transportation safety goals, as the NSIB is tasked with ensuring safety across air, rail and maritime sectors. This MoU represents a comprehensive strategy to enhance operational efficiency and foster cross-sectoral cooperation in accident investigation and prevention.

With Nigeria’s increasing reliance on maritime infrastructure for domestic and international trade, this partnership addresses the growing complexities of maritime activities. It underscores a shared commitment to adopting global best practices in safety and strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to respond to and prevent maritime accidents.

The director of public affairs and consumer protection at the NSIB, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji described the gains from the MoU as far-reaching. According to her, the collaboration aims to foster a safer maritime environment, with both institutions pledging ongoing cooperation, resource sharing and continuous engagement to tackle evolving challenges in maritime safety.

By leveraging their combined strengths, the NSIB and the Nigerian Navy are charting a new course to ensure the safety and security of Nigeria’s waterways, safeguard lives, and protect the nation’s maritime assets for years to come.
