The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation into a collision involving a train and a Lagos State BRT staff bus which occurred in the morning of March 9, 2023, at PWD, Shogunle on Agege Motor Road, Ikeja, Lagos State.
According to the bureau’s general manager of public affairs, Tunji Oketunbi the collision occurred when the BRT bus crossed the train tracks despite warnings from the train traffic controller and traffic signals.
Emergency responders were quick to evacuate both the bus and train from the scene of the accident. This investigation marks the first train accident investigation undertaken by the bureau since its establishment under the NSIB Act 2022.
The NSIB appealed to members of the public to provide pictures, videos or recordings that could help with their comprehensive investigation. As a multi-modal investigation agency, the NSIB is mandated to investigate transportation accidents and incidents in Nigeria to identify probable causes and make safety recommendations to prevent similar, future occurrences.
