The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and Aero Contractors have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration in industry-led safety training, knowledge exchange and human capital development.
This strategic partnership underscores Nigeria’s commitment to upholding global aviation safety standards.
The agreement, signed in Lagos in the presence of key industry stakeholders, establishes a framework for structured training programs, technical collaborations and resource-sharing between NSIB and Aero Contractors. Under the MoU, NSIB’s transportation safety officers and technical personnel will receive specialised on-the-job training at Aero’s state-of-the-art facilities, which include simulators and maintenance workshops. In return, Aero’s technical personnel will benefit from NSIB-led training in accident investigation and related disciplines, fostering a robust exchange of expertise.
Speaking on the development, director-general of NSIB, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr. described the MoU as a transformative step towards mutual growth and enhanced aviation safety. “This MoU is more than just a document; it represents a commitment to knowledge-sharing and safety enhancement. Through this agreement, we will design and implement customised on-the-job training programmes for our transportation safety officers and technical staff, drawing on Aero’s advanced facilities and technical expertise,” he stated.
Badeh also emphasised the reciprocal nature of the partnership, highlighting NSIB’s commitment to training Aero’s technical personnel in accident investigation and related areas. “This two-way knowledge exchange will not only benefit both organisations but also contribute to the overall safety of Nigeria’s airspace,” he added.
The MoU further paves the way for joint conferences, symposiums, and workshops to promote best practices, explore emerging aviation trends and build capacity across both organisations. These initiatives will involve pilots, engineers, dispatchers and flight attendants, all working towards the shared goal of strengthening aviation safety. The partnership aligns with international best practices, particularly the standards and recommended practices outlined in Annex 13 of the Chicago Convention.
Aero Contractors’ managing director, Mr. Ado Sanusi reaffirmed the importance of the partnership, stating, “Safety is not just a regulatory requirement; it is the foundation of our industry. With over 60 years of experience, Aero Contractors has built a strong safety culture, and we firmly believe that safety is everyone’s business. This MoU underscores our commitment to investing in the future of a safe Nigerian airspace by sharing our expertise and technical knowledge with NSIB.”
Sanusi further emphasised the role of on-the-job training (OJT) in fostering continuous learning and professional development. “Through this partnership, we aim to equip NSIB’s Transportation Safety Officers with the practical skills and knowledge needed to excel in their duties, leveraging Aero’s facilities, simulators, and technical resources,” he added.
To ensure the effective implementation of the MoU, a steering committee comprising representatives from NSIB and Aero Contractors will oversee its execution. The agreement also includes provisions for periodic reviews and necessary amendments to keep pace with the evolving challenges of aviation safety.
Reacting to the development, managing director of Universal Aviation Group and an aviation safety advocate, Engr. Musa Adamu commended the initiative. “This partnership is a model for how regulatory bodies and industry players should collaborate to enhance safety. The aviation sector is highly complex, and training must evolve to keep pace with technological advancements and global best practices. NSIB and Aero Contractors are setting a precedent that should be emulated across other sectors of the transportation industry,” he noted.
Both NSIB and Aero Contractors have also committed to upholding the highest standards of confidentiality and professionalism throughout the partnership. All shared information will be used exclusively for safety investigation training, ensuring trust and integrity in their collaboration.
A statement released by NSIB’s director of public affairs and family assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji highlighted the significance of the partnership. According to her, “With this agreement, NSIB and Aero Contractors reaffirm their shared vision of a safer, more resilient aviation sector. As this partnership takes flight, it promises to elevate the standard of aviation safety training, ensuring Nigeria remains at the forefront of transportation safety excellence in the region.”
