The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has applauded global tech giants Google, X (formerly Twitter), Microsoft and TikTok for adhering to the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries.
This regulatory framework, issued jointly by NITDA, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), aims to foster online safety and mitigate harmful content.
The 2023 compliance report showcases the platformsā efforts in aligning with the code and their respective community guidelines. Key achievements include:
- Handling 4,125,283 registered complaints.
- Takedown of 65,853,581 harmful content pieces.
- Review and re-upload of 379,433 user-appealed content.
- Closure or deactivation of 12,099,633 accounts.
A statement by NITDAās director of communications and media relations, Mrs. Hadiza Umar highlighted the positive impact of these measures in promoting a safer digital ecosystem for Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike.
Additionally, data from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicates that foreign digital companies, including social media platforms, contributed over ā¦2.55 trillion (approximately $1.5 billion) in taxes during the first half of 2024. This milestone reflects the effectiveness of Nigeriaās robust regulatory environment in fostering compliance and economic growth.
While acknowledging these successes, NITDA emphasised the importance of sustained collaboration and innovation to tackle emerging challenges in the digital space. The agency remains committed to enhancing user safety, digital literacy and transparency in partnership with stakeholders, ensuring a responsible and secure online environment for all.
