The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a flash flood alert for Sokoto and 19 other states, warning of a high risk of flooding throughout July 2025.

According to its latest weather forecast and Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), NiMet said the increased risk is due to the continued onset of rainfall across the country, which could trigger flash floods in vulnerable areas.

States identified with notable flood risks include Sokoto, Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Rivers and Akwa Ibom.

To reduce the impact, NiMet advised residents to clear drainage channels, avoid walking or driving through floodwaters and relocate from high-risk zones if necessary. Other safety tips include preparing emergency kits, switching off electricity and gas during flooding, reinforcing mudslide-prone areas and raising community awareness.

The agency urged all stakeholders to take proactive steps to protect lives, property and infrastructure during this period.
