The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning about the increased risk of heat stress across 19 states in the coming days due to rising temperatures and high atmospheric moisture levels.
The agency cautioned that both daytime and nighttime temperatures would remain elevated, leading to potential health risks.
States expected to be most affected include Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi and Cross River, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Others include parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto and the Southwest and coastal regions.
NiMet warned that prolonged exposure to excessive heat could cause fatigue, irritability, reduced cognitive function and decreased productivity. To mitigate these effects, the agency advised the public to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, and limit outdoor activities during peak sun hours between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
The agency also recommended the use of cooling devices such as fans and air conditioners, seeking shaded areas when outdoors and wearing protective accessories like wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses.
As extreme weather conditions become more frequent, NiMet urged Nigerians to take necessary precautions to safeguard their health and well-being.
