The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning regarding an impending severe thunderstorm approaching the northeastern states.
The agency’s Central Forecasts Office (CFO) revealed that severe thunderstorm cells have been observed in areas such as Borno, Adamawa, Gombe and Taraba, moving in a NE-SW direction at a groundspeed of 30 km/h. These cells are expected to move westward and bring squally thunderstorms to certain cities.
Additionally, a thunderstorm cell has been spotted developing over the high ground of Jos, accompanied by squally winds and heavy rains. This cell is predicted to propagate westward, affecting regions including Gombe, Bauchi, Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, Enugu, Ebonyi and northern Cross River within the next 3 to 6 hours. Thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rains are also expected in parts of Kaduna, FCT and Niger states within the next 6 hours.
NiMet advised the public to exercise caution in areas where thunderstorms are anticipated, as strong winds may precede the rains. “There is a risk of falling trees, electric poles, unsecured objects and weak buildings. It is recommended to stay indoors, especially during heavy rainfall, to avoid lightning strikes.
“Airline operators are urged to regularly access weather reports from NiMet for effective planning in their operations. Disaster risk managers, agencies and individuals are advised to take proactive measures to prevent the loss of lives and property during the rainy season,” the statement advised.
The Central Forecast Office (CFO) said it would continuously monitor the weather and provide updates as necessary.
