The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has commenced preparations for the public unveiling of its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), scheduled for the first quarter of next year.
The SCP provides insights into the upcoming season’s climate outlook, helping to mitigate climate risks, enhance adaptation strategies, support livelihoods and ensure sustainable food security. As an early warning tool, the SCP aligns with the United Nations’ Early Warning for All (EW4ALL) initiative championed by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). The forecast combines global and regional models with atmospheric data to produce scientifically rigorous predictions tailored to Nigeria.
The SCP document serves as a vital resource for policy formulation, planning and decision-making across various sectors, particularly agriculture, aviation, construction, water resources, health, trade and tourism.
As part of preparations, a dedicated Task Team recently inducted and trained new members to support the SCP’s development. Speaking at the induction and training session in Abuja, Haruna Zakari, task team coordinator and technical assistant to NiMet’s director-general, Prof. Charles Anosike, described the team’s role as crucial to both the agency and the nation.
“The DG of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, has entrusted this carefully selected Task Team with producing a document of national importance. He believes the team will uphold professionalism, commitment, and dedication to deliver a noteworthy document on time,” Zakari said.
Zakari emphasised the SCP’s significance as an early warning mechanism to bolster Nigeria’s economic resilience and sustainability. He noted that the newly inducted members would integrate seamlessly into the team, facilitating the preparation of the SCP draft and ensuring its timely delivery.
