The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) will unveil its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
This year’s theme is “The Role of Early Warnings Towards a Climate-Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development.”
NiMet plays a vital role in forecasting Nigeria’s climate patterns, including rainfall and temperature, by publishing the expected annual climate variables each year in the first quarter. This is in line with the agency’s mandate to advise the government and the public on weather, climate and water-related issues.
According to NiMet’s director-general, Prof. Charles Anosike Seasonal Climate Prediction is critical for providing weather and climate data that directly impacts various sectors. These sectors include agriculture, aviation, disaster risk management, health, oil and gas, telecommunications, tourism, transportation (both water and land), power (including hydro and renewable), water resources management, among others.
“The seasonal forecast also includes socio-economic implications of the expected rainfall and temperature patterns on these sectors,” Anosike said.
The 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction document will offer comprehensive climate forecasts, including the onset and cessation dates of the 2025 rainy season, the length of the cropping season, total expected rainfall across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, temperature forecasts for January through May, and health-related predictions like malaria and meningitis vigilance forecasts.
This national document will be presented publicly with a broad audience consisting of representatives from the government, private sector, development partners, non-governmental organisations, diplomatic communities, and farmers’ associations. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, will officially present the publication, which includes a summary for policymakers and translations in three major Nigerian languages, alongside the State of the Climate in Nigeria report.
