The director-general of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative at the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), Prof. Charles Anosike has affirmed the agency’s dedication to housing a WIGOS (WMO Integrated Global Observing System) regional centre in Nigeria.
Anosike made this statement in Abuja on Thursday, May 30, 2024, while receiving participants at the four-day training workshop for Regional WIGOS Centers in WMO Regional Association (RA 1 – West Central Africa) at his office in Abuja.
“I appreciate your efforts. Our people are thrilled that the WIGOS workshop is taking place in Nigeria. Having heard the discussion on the requirements for the center to start functioning, I am pleased to confirm that the outlined process aligns with the ongoing work we are engaged in, particularly the quality management system (QMS) already established at NiMet,” Anosike remarked.
The head of the delegation and WMO Representative for North Central and West Africa, Mr. Bernard Gomez praised, Anosike and NiMet for their willingness to house the WIGOS Centre in Nigeria.
“I am thrilled by NiMet’s commitment to this cause. It’s a service to the community of African nations and others benefitting from the data produced at the center. There is a group of experts from different parts of Africa and the world ready to assist NiMet in this endeavor,” Gomez expressed.
