The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Nasarawa State University have resolved to strengthen their partnership, which began in February 2020 with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
This decision was reached during a courtesy visit by the university’s vice-chancellor, Prof. Sa’adatu Hassan Liman to the director-general of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike at NiMet headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.
Anosike congratulated Liman on her appointment and highlighted that the renewed partnership would include joint research and outreach programmes. “NiMet and Nasarawa State University can collaborate on community outreach initiatives to educate the public on weather and climate information,” he said.
He further emphasised the importance of early warnings and disaster risk management, noting, “Nasarawa State is very viable with regard to agriculture. One major area we need to start immediately is the downscaling of our seasonal climate prediction.”
Liman expressed her gratitude to Anosike and NiMet management for receiving her and her team on short notice. She stated, “We are going around to see our partners so that we can strengthen our relationships. We look forward to renewing the partnership between both institutions in terms of research and education, exchange of staff to enhance teaching and learning, funding of research and education, and training of university staff to meet global standards in meteorology and related fields.”
The collaboration aims to advance research, education, and community outreach in meteorology, benefiting both institutions and the broader public.
