Faced with the dual challenge of climate change and its impact on vulnerable populations, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) are joining forces to address the growing issue of human trafficking linked to climate-induced displacement.

This collaboration was the key outcome of discussions held when the director-general of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike paid a courtesy visit to NAPTIP director-general, Binta Bello at NAPTIP’s Abuja headquarters on September 24, 2024.

During the visit, Anosike congratulated Bello on her appointment and highlighted the importance of leadership in tackling the intersection of climate change and human trafficking. “It is crucial to have a leader who understands the far-reaching impact of climate change. We are witnessing the increasing effects of extreme weather events that are displacing people and pushing them into poverty. Displaced individuals often become vulnerable to human trafficking,” he said.

Anosike stressed the need for preparedness, particularly in protecting those most vulnerable to climate disasters. “Investing in early warning systems is essential. While we cannot stop extreme weather events, we can mitigate their impacts. By partnering with NAPTIP, we can reach vulnerable groups, including young people, women and the elderly, who are most affected by these crises.”

He further explained the significance of strengthening the relationship between NiMet and NAPTIP to influence policymaking. “The flooding we are currently experiencing in the northeast will soon affect the southwest and southeast. Through this partnership, we aim to ensure that all levels of government respond appropriately to reduce the impact of extreme weather events,” Anosike concluded.

In her response, NAPTIP’s Bello emphasised her commitment to eradicating human trafficking in Nigeria. “My vision as director-general is not just to prevent human trafficking but to eliminate it entirely. This aligns with the current administration’s determination, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to combat this menace. Human trafficking has become a national concern due to the significant number of victims from every state in the country,” she stated.

Bello underscored the importance of collaboration in finding a lasting solution. “We must strengthen partnerships and increase advocacy across the country to reduce the vulnerability of our people,” she said.
