The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) are partnering to advance climate-smart ferry operations in Lagos State.
During a courtesy visit to NiMet’s headquarters, LASWA general manager Oluwadamilola Emmanuel led a delegation that was received by NiMet’s director-general, Prof. Charles Anosike.
The meeting explored ways to integrate NiMet’s real-time weather data into LASWA’s ferry scheduling and operational systems, aiming to improve safety, reduce delays and enhance weather-informed decision-making on the waterways.
The two agencies also agreed to formalise the collaboration through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), which would support smarter ferry routing and boost emergency preparedness.
They further emphasised the need for sustained training of ferry operators and increased public awareness to ensure safer transport on Lagos waterways.
The partnership is expected to position Lagos as a national model for climate-resilient transportation, leveraging technology and inter-agency coordination to improve waterway safety and efficiency.
