The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) organised a training session for the directors and senior management staff of the agency.
The training, held on Wednesday, in collaboration with management consulting firm Balanced Scorecard West Africa, was themed “Balanced Scorecard Performance Management System.”
Declaring the session open, the director-general of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike stated that management had prioritised staff welfare and capacity development as part of performance management. This aligns with the seven-point agenda of President Bola Tinubu and the performance bond signed with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, as well as agencies in the aviation ministry, which emphasised human capacity development within the aviation industry. Keyamo had remarked during the performance bond signing that, “This will be the basis upon which regular appraisals will be done.”
Continuing, Anosike said, “We are embarking on a new journey at NiMet as we prepare to roll out a balanced scorecard performance management system. It is one of the global management tools that organisations use to translate strategy into performance. This workshop will help us improve our strategy formulation, enhance our ability to create strategies and pave the way for enduring creativity within the agency.”
He further explained that the balanced scorecard performance management system allows organizations to communicate strategy clearly to all stakeholders. “Value-creation activities in organisations are no longer strictly measured by tangible assets and fixed resources. Instead, value lies in the ideas of people within the organisation, in service delivery and supplier relationships, in key information databases and in cultures capable of innovation and consistently delivering quality. At NiMet, we can come together to solve problems and create value in ways we never imagined.”
Concluding, Anosike urged, “I encourage everyone at NiMet, in line with the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda of President Bola Tinubu, to embrace performance management as the foundation for improving performance. Strategy dictates the path forward. It is not the change effort itself that is likely to cause failure. It is always the execution and development—the implementation, execution and development—that matter.”
