The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE) held a one-day workshop focusing on downscaling the 2024 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) for Delta State.
The event, part of an ongoing collaboration between NiMet and FUPRE, took place at the university in Effurun, Delta State.
In his keynote address, NiMet’s director-general, Prof. Charles Anosike, represented by the director of applied meteorological services, Mrs. Glory Onyegbule expressed gratitude to the vice-chancellor of FUPRE, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh for hosting the workshop. The aim was to build resilience among smallholder farmers by identifying adaptation options, best practices, and addressing adaptation gaps.
Anosike highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s eight-point agenda, emphasising food security, poverty alleviation, economic growth and job creation. He stated, “NiMet is positioned to climate-proof the economy by providing timely weather and climate information.”
Concluding his remarks, Anosike noted that NiMet collaborates with key stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, universities, development partners, NGOs and CBOs. Through this collaboration, NiMet provides critical weather and climate information such as the Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), Crop Weather Calendar, Dekadal Agromet Bulletin and other early warning products to support smallholder farmers across Nigeria.
